Recovery Became My Purpose
"In September 2020, my life changed overnight when I suffered a spontaneous vertebral artery dissection that caused a stroke.
I had to relearn how to walk, talk, think, and see. What once felt automatic became a daily battle.
The road to recovery has been long, uncertain, and at times discouraging, but it also revealed a strength within me that I never knew existed.
After rehabilitation, I made a decision that I would not let that moment define the limits of my future.
Since September 2024, I have completed six 5Ks, one 10K, five half marathons, and one 50K ultramarathon.
Each finish line has represented more than distance. It has symbolized resilience, healing, gratitude, and unwavering faith.
Now I'm training for my next goal—a full marathon in Luxor, Egypt, in January 2027.
This marathon is bigger than a race. It is proof that recovery is possible, strength can be rebuilt, and faith can outrun fear."

Fear Doesn't Get the Final Word
"Because I was diagnosed with something that doesn't define me.
Fear has no place here—or in anyone's life.
We can choose to move forward and live with peace and joy in our hearts, or we can surrender and throw in the towel."
— Kayla Howell
I Run Because I Still Can
"I've been blessed to be an athlete all my life, but I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in my early thirties.
Many members of my family have lived with this same autoimmune disease and became increasingly limited by it.
I have stayed the course with healthy eating and daily exercise.
I run because one day soon, I may not be able to.
I run now because I still can."

Preparing for What Came Next
"My 'why' for running the Florida Half Marathon last November—just three days before my splenectomy—was deeply intentional.
I knew that if I could push my body and mind through 13.1 miles, I could walk into surgery knowing I was strong enough to handle what was ahead.
It became a physical and mental reminder that I can do hard things—and that I am far more capable than I often give myself credit for.
As Philippians 4:13 says, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' That verse wasn't just encouragement—it was grounding.
That race wasn't the end goal—it was preparation.
A declaration that I was ready for what came next physically, mentally, and spiritually."

Different Stories. One Community.
There isn't one reason people run.
Some run for peace.
Some run for healing.
Some run for family.
Some run because tomorrow isn't promised.
Some run because they simply love the trail beneath their feet.
Whatever your reason...
Thank you for being part of The Florida Run community.
Every race is made more meaningful because of the people who show up—not just with running shoes, but with stories worth sharing.
